Snowy Owl (Nyctea scandiaca)
The snowy owl is the largest of the North American owls. It is one of the more beautiful owls, and is also one of the best falconry birds. They can catch nearly any game available in North America. Snowy owls are also extremely well tempered, like a puppy. An ideal falconry bird, except they cannot take warm weather, and overheat at 75F. Flying weight is about 50oz. They cannot be sexed by size, but can be sexed by DNA analysis. Females resemble immatures, while males molt to a near-white.
While federal regulations allow the use of snowy owls in falconry, a falconer's state regulations may not. Please see the legal information page for an explanation.
