Size: 48-56 Range: Africa, from Limpopo River and
central Nabia through East Africa to Ethiopia Food: Reptiles, insects, young game
birds, young hare Habits: Love to hunt from a soar
where they hang motionless in turbulent air Comments: Are thought to be a
different species than the Javal Buzzard (Buteo rufofusus),
which is found in the southern areas of Africa. Size and shape are
most like the red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamacianus), but have a
shorter tail. Leslie Brown, in African Birds of Prey, has
seen Augur Buzzards soaring around peaks of Mount Kenya at 17,000
feet and found nests at 12,000 feet -- indicating the birds can
tolerate cold weather well.
